Also, at the same time, there is an increased bui1d—up of keratin on the outer most layer of the skin. Increased build up of sebum and keratin may lead to clogged pores. The clogging of the pores will result in non-inflammatory acne, also known as comedowns (whiteheads and blackheads). Inflammatory acne is a result of the growth of P acnes bacteria in the sebaceous glands. The inflammatory acne may appear reddened, raised (known as papule), contain pus (known as pustule), and can rupture spontaneously. This inflammatory acne is the one that causes permanent scarring.


TREATMENT

Topical (directly applied to the skin) antibiotics are effective in the treatment of inflammatory acne; an agent such as clindamycin has proven to be an effective treatment. Topical application of antibiotics significantly reduces the number of papules and pustules in patients with inflammatory acne. Topical antibiotics are available in gels and solutions and the medication applied will depend on the patient’s skin type and preference. Individuals with oily skin can use the solution as it has a slightly drying effect and can also reduce oiliness. Those with normal skin may opt for gel as it is non-drying and retains moisture to prevent dehydration. Lastly, if you have inflammatory acne, please seek medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist before you start treatment as they may be able to provide you with the proper counseling on acne management.

Infantile acne, a rare condition affecting male infants, is associated with subsequent severe acne vulgaris in adolescence. There seems to be a link between increased levels of androgen or male sex hormones, and the heightened secretion of sebum at puberty. Fats and oils are an extremely important part of a healthy diet and are also highly beneficial in fat loss diets. For many years, so called nutritional experts have blamed dietry fat for causing obesity, high cholesterol levels and heart disease, however this statement is far from the truth. These people have been victims of misinformation from poorly conducted tests and research involving fat. Fat is only harmful when consumed in excess, just like every other macronutrient.

What is fat?
Fat is an energy source which provides 9 calories per gram and is made up of a glycerol backbone which is esterified with 3 fatty acids to form a triglyceride and 3 molecules of water. These fatty acids determine whether the fat is saturated (no double bonds), monounsaturated (one double bond) or polyunsaturated (more than 1 double bond).

Saturated Fat
Saturated fat is mainly found in animal products and are naturally a solid at room temperature. Saturated fats tend to have a negative effect on blood lipids however this is not always the case depending on the persons activity levels. This type of fat is not essential.

Polyunsaturated Fat
Polyunsaturated fat can be split up into 2 categories : Omega 3 polyunsaturated fat & Omega 6 polyunsaturated fat. These fats have a positive effect on human health however excess consumption of omega 6 and lack of omega 3 have a negative effect on human health. These types of fat are essential.

The most important omega 3 fatty acid is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). This can be altered inside the body to form other fatty acids, with the most important being eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

The most important omega 6 fatty acid is linoleic acid (LA) . This can be altered inside the body to form other fatty acids, with the most important being gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and arachidonic acid (AA).

Polyunsaturated Omega 6 can be found in vegetable oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, peanut oil, and sesame oil

Eicosanoids are involved in many bodily functions. If we’re consuming a lot of omega 6 fatty acids, we produce phospholipids with high omega 6 content. The eicosanoids are then made from the omega 6s. The same rule applies for eating omega 3s.

The eicosanoids made from omega 3’s and omega 6’s have very different functions. One of the main differences is that omega 6 eicosanoids are very pro-inflammatory, whereas omega 3 eicosanoids are very weakly inflammatory. A dietary shift towards more omega 3s has been shown to help in a variety of diseases from asthma to cardiovascular disease, but it also has the potential to be of benefit to athletes. Since they have anti-inflammatory properties, they can reduce DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and speed up recovery of broken muscle tissue from hard workouts.

High levels of omega 6’s have also been linked to greater insulin resistance. High levels of blood insulin inhibit HSL (Hormone sensitive lipase) which is an enzyme responsible for mobilising fatty acids from cells stored in adipose tissue. This will hinder your ability to lose fat. Fat cells (Adipocytes) become more insulin resistant with higher levels of omega 3’s which can help reduce fat storage.

Monounsaturated fats work in a similar way to polyunsaturated fats in that they are shuttled into cell membranes and converted to phospholipids. Monounsaturated fats are beneficial in that they prevent the oxidative degradation of lipids. More simplistic this means it prevents free radicals stealing electrons from cell membranes which results in cell damage.

Saturated fats are an important part of a bodybuilders diet who is looking to gain mass. Saturated fat has a positive effect on sex hormone production. Increased testosterone means bigger and stronger muscles and decreased recovery times.

Another important function of fat is that it decreases the absorption rate of nutrients in the small intestine. When fat is ingested, CCK (cholecystokinin) is released, which is a hormone that influences gastric motility. This hormone stimulates the contraction of the pyloric sphincter which is a ring of muscles that control the rate of passage of materials through the stomach to the small intestine and therefore slowing gastric emptying. We can take advantage of this effect by combining fat with proteins to slow the absorption in long periods of fasting (sleep).

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer.



Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto,
Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.


He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as CorningWare, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food.



You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is
in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.


Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer. It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. There're 4,000 harmful chemicals (though in diluted form) in one stick of cigarette. Taking one puff is 600 times worst than inhaling the exhaust fumes from vehicles.

2.3 Overheating Meat
2.4 Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a chemical which is a promoter of cancer cells.

2.6 Overnight Rice (where Aflatoxin is accumulated)
2.7 Food that is low in fibre: Our body needs 25 gm of both soluble & insoluble fibre daily. We must drink at least 1.5 litres of plain water a day.

2.8 Contaminated Food (e.g. moulded bread causes our body to secrete toxins that may eventually lead to liver cancer in the long run. Never eat bread that is kept in room temperature for more than 2 days especially in a humid weather like Singapore's.


3. Types of fat and which is the best?

3.1 Highly Recommended for Health:-
i. Olive Oil - The best of all oils. It does not absorb in our body.
ii. Fish Oil - Omega 3 (contained in NI's Circulytes) haspoly-unsaturated fat. It's good for our brain cells.
iii. Peanut Oil - It contains Vitamin E. A small dosage is recommended only.
3.2 Not Recommended for Health
i Vegetable Fat - Palm oil is worst than coconut oil. It is high in cholesterol and highly unsaturated.
ii Coconut Oil - It has saturated fat.

4. Specific Food & Beverages
4.1 Egg when eaten too much can cause High Colon Cancer. Risk Ovary Cancer, Prostate Cancer.
4.2 Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.
4.3 Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption. Other alternative is to take tomato sauce.
4.4 Coffee is good because it contains 2 anti-oxidants. Inhaling the coffee aroma for half each day is equivalent to eating two oranges a day. However, the residue of over-burned coffee is extremely bad for health. It can cause cancer.
4.5 Tea, as long as it is in its original tea leaves and not processed into BOH or Lipton packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants. Recommended dosage is 4 cups a day.

Have a balanced lifestyle. Exercise regularly.

Dangerous Potato Chips

Public knowledge of the serious dangers found in potato chips may finally be surfacing. The California-based Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) has filed notices with the state's attorney general against potato chip manufacturers:

-->Lay's potato chip maker PepsiCo Inc.
-->Pringles maker Proctor & Gamble Co.
-->Cape Cod potato chip parent Lance Inc.
-->Kettle Chips maker Kettle Foods Inc.

... that would require them to place labels on their products warning consumers about the high levels of acrylamide found inside. Acrylamide is formed when starchy foods are baked or fried at high temperatures and is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

Manufacturers who sell their products without such warnings are in violation of California law, California Proposition 65.

The attorney general's office has 60 days to decide to pursue the case; if the state declines, the ELF will file lawsuits against the companies.






What Do the Chip Makers Have to Say?
The reaction from the chip makers was on the defensive ... though the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) wavering position on the dangers of acrylamide certainly doesn't help.

Perhaps the FDA should review the report developed by the ELF that listed just how far various chip brands exceeded the state's required warning levels for acrylamide. The offenders include:

-->Kettle Chips (lightly salted): 505 times
-->Kettle Chips (honey dijon): 495 times
-->Pringles Snack Stacks (pizza-flavored): 170 times
-->Lay's Baked: 150 times

I suspect nearly everyone reading this enjoys the taste of potato chips. However, they are clearly one of the most toxic processed foods you can eat. Do you really want to trade a few moments of taste pleasure for cancer?

Potato chips are loaded with acrylamide. This is only one of the many side effects that occur when food is highly processed; for instance, using high temperatures to cook foods can contribute to the formation of carcinogenic substances. Another similar example occurs when meats are cooked at high temperatures. In this case, heterocyclic amines can be formed.

Ideally, you should consume foods that are minimally processed to avoid these types of toxic byproducts. I assure you that there are many others, most of which have yet to be discovered. Acrylamides have only been known for a few years and many experts discounted them when they were first discovered.

In the best case, over half of your foods should be uncooked and eaten in the raw state. My diet is typically about 80 percent to 90 percent raw foods, and I find it is one of the major ways that I am able to remain healthy and avoid all sorts of health problems and challenges.

Beware of Cold Drinks

This is a very good article. Not only about the warm water after your meal, but about heart attacks. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine . Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

A couple of weeks ago I was unfortunate to get stung by both a bee and hornet while working in the garden. My arm swelled so off to the doctor I went. The clinic gave me cream and an antihistamine.

Next day the swelling got progressively worse so off to my regular doctor I went...infected arm needed an antibiotic.

**The interesting thing is what the Doctor told me...
'Next time you get stung put a penny on the bite for 15 minutes.'


That night my niece got stung by two bees. When she came over to swim.
I looked at the bite and it had already started to swell. So off I
went to get my money and taped a penny to her arm for 15 minutes.

Next morning, there was no sign of a bite. We were very surprised but figured perhaps she just wasn't allergic to the sting. Then guess what? I got stung again by a hornet twice on my left hand. I was distressed thinking I would have to go to the doctor for yet more antibiotics.


I promptly went into the house, got my money out and taped two pennies to my bites, then sat and sulked for 15 minutes. The penny took the string out of the bite immediately. I still wasn't sure what was going to happen.


In the meantime the hornets were attacking my niece and she got stung on the thumb. Out came another penny. The next morning I could only see a micro spot where I had been stung...no redness, no swelling. I went to see my niece and hers was the same. I couldn't even see where she got stung!


The Doctor said that somehow the copper in the penny counteracts the bite. I would never have believed it. But it DEFINITELY WORKED !

What Causes Loose Skin?

Why does the skin sometimes take on this hanging appearance (e.g., abdominal pannus) during the course of losing large amounts of weight? Why is it that not everyone who loses weight has this problem? Why do we see flabby skin develop even in people who have lost much less weight? What is the difference between those people who suffer from flabby or loose skin, and those who achieve weight loss while completely or partially avoiding this problem?

Well, the droopy appearance of folds of skin is most probably caused by crash diets that sacrifice large amounts of supporting muscle, or lean body mass. Even less severe diets and weight loss from bariatric surgery can result in a substantial amount of muscle loss over time. Perhaps future scientific research will show a correlation between loss of lean body mass on a diet with the development of redundant skin.


In the meanwhile, here's an example to illustrate how muscle loss on a diet can cause droopy folds of flabby, loose, skin. Let's say you start at a bodyweight of 115 pounds, in good toned shape with firm skin, but you gradually gain 100 pounds of body fat. You then go on some sort of crash weight-loss program or have bariatric surgery to quickly lose those 100 pounds.

However, let's say not all of the weight you lose is body fat. Perhaps 20% of your lost weight is muscle. This is not unusual on a severe crash diet, and many people lose much more muscle than that on these diets. In fact, if you were to fast on just water, 60% of your weight loss would be muscle. Besides, because muscle can rapidly dehydrate and sacrifice protein to provide an additional supply of energy, muscle loss increases the more active you are on a severe diet. But let's stick to a modest number of 20% muscle loss in this example.

Now, after your severe diet, you have returned to your starting bodyweight of 115 pounds, but your internal body composition is altered. You have 20 fewer pounds of muscle on your body, and 20 more pounds of body fat, even though you weigh as much as you did before you put on the extra weight! The percentage of your bodyweight that is fat is now higher than before you gained weight.

Would you expect your body to look as shapely and firm under these circumstances, with a higher percentage of body fat? NO! At 115 pounds, body parts that used to be filled with toned muscle are now filled with a greater volume of flabby fat instead. Pound for pound, fat takes up more volume than muscle, pushing farther out until it begins to hang in folds of skin. Continuing on with your diet only exacerbates the problem as your muscle level drops even more. Even worse, when your bodyweight dips below your normal starting point, you are now too thin and covered with flabby skin!

Now imagine the effect if you lose several hundred pounds of bodyweight, and your muscle loss is twice as much, 40-50% or more of lost bodyweight. Those voluminous folds of flab can become an enormous problem.

2. Do right and left sidekicks for 1 minute each
Kicking is a very effective way to slim down the legs. Just do sidekicks for a minute at a time for each leg. Sidekicks seem to work the legs better than front kicks. Depending on your conditioning, you may want to do 2 minutes for each leg. But make sure to only do 1 minute at a time.

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.


{NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke}

Negative Effects of Caffeine

Heavy daily caffeine use – defined by the Mayo Clinic as more than 500 to 600 mg a day, or about four to seven cups of coffee – can cause serious problems. WARMUP
BREATHE: as in yoga the importance of good breathing is essential to getting the most out of your exercises. As you look around your world become aware of when you are holding your breath. Breathing regularly will bring more oxygen to your eyes and reduce stress on your vision.


BLINK: remembering to blink will help you from staring and working too hard as you do your exercises. It will also soothe, and moisturize the eyes.


PALMING: This exercise is done without any glasses or contact lenses. Palming is done to reduce stress around the eyes, by placing your palms around your eyes you are stimulating very powerful acupuncture points which help to calm the mind, relax the muscles around the eyes and bring healing energy to the eyes (through increased circulation).


Remember to breathe. Take two deep breaths.
Find a flat table to sit at, lean forward, place your elbows on the table, and close your eyes gently.
Now, place the palm of your left hand over your left eye, your fingers on your forehead, and the hollow of your palm directly over the eye, but not touching it. There is still room to blink. The heel of your hand rests on the cheekbones.
Then place the other hand over the other eye with the fingers crossing over the fingers from the other hand. The palm should be over the eye and the heel of the hand resting on the cheekbones.
Make sure your elbows are low enough so that your face and the weight of your head is resting in your palms so that there is no stress on the neck.
Palming gives you the opportunity not to try to see, but to just focus on relaxing your mind and eyes simultaneously. Even though we recommend that you do this for only three minutes, palming can be done for as little or as much as you like throughout the day as a way to relax your eyes and calm down from the tensions of daily life.

1. FIGURE EIGHTS
This exercise increases the flexibility of your eye muscles in a relaxed way.

Remember to breathe. Take two deep breaths.
Either stand or sit with your feet shoulder width apart with your hands at your sides. Do not cross your hands. Let your knees bend slightly.
Imagine a figure eight approximately ten feet from you lying horizontally (lying in the shape of an infinity sign)
Let your eyes trace along the figure eight without moving your head. First trace in one direction, then in the opposite direction. Always remember to continue to breathe and blink as your eyes move effortlessly along the figure eight. Check for tension in the jaw and let it release.

2. THE HOT DOG
This exercise is done to improve the flexibility of the inside muscles of your eyes (called the ciliary muscles). It is important to keep those muscles flexible.

Remember to breathe. Take two deep breaths.
Either stand or sit with your feet, shoulder width apart. If you are standing make sure your knees are slightly bent.
Aim your eyes on any target in the distance.
While looking at your distant target bring your index fingers, tips touching about eight inches in front of your eyes and into your line of sight.
Still aiming your eyes at the distant target calmly notice a mini hot dog has appeared between the tips of your fingers. Remember to continue to breathe easily and deeply. Do not let the awesome beauty of the mini hot dog to distract you and to cause you to aim your eyes directly at it. Continue to aim your eyes towards the distant target.
Pull the tips of your fingers apart slightly and observe the hot dog floating in the air.
Now keep the hot dog for two breaths, then look directly at your fingers and the hot dog will disappear. Do not retrieve the hot dog for two breaths; then look again in the distance and find it once again. Switch back and forth for two minutes.
